Archive for August, 2013

the edinburgh festival finished at the weekend there, and it never fails to surprise me how fast everyone disappears. How did they all manage to leave at once? You just get used to the place being mobbed all the time, so when the tourists all go, it can seem eerily quiet.
For the past month, when you looked out of the shop door from Tribe 1, the street has been teeming with people, the beer garden across the road has been jumping and the general noise levels have been up. When I got to work on tuesday the only person I saw was a guy sweeping up  😆 Edinburgh’s collective post festival hangover

Murray got a rose on his arm, as part of his collage of images dear to him

Emma is going for a large phoenix on her back, we got the lines and a little bit of basic shading done today this will be mostly in black and grey with colour in the flames

Charly got his nature sleeve finished! This piece has been a blast, Ive enjoyed all the wee creatures, chatting about them as they were tattooed on and watching it all come together.
Today’s little bats were the last critters to be finished, one of them is called Lil Drac, after the orphaned fruit bat, one of the most adorable creatures on youtube 😀

We took the photos outside, which is great for colours, but the lower part of the sleeve is annoyingly out of focus. Charly’s partner is good a photography, though, so hopefully I can wrangle some more professional shots for my portfolio

We have been through a couple of staff changes recently, In glasgow our receptionist and piercer Mark has started college; he has handed the reception reins over to Maggie, who was up until then only helping out occasionally.
Now she is the full time friendly face behind the counter, and mark comes in later in the day to do the piercing.
I think these photos illustrate the change that has taken place

Maggie’s pencil case

Maggie used to work on reception at a hospital, she is super organised and knows her stuff. Apparently making appointments for consultants is even harder than keeping us tattooists happy   😆
And there’s probably nothing that anyone  can chuck at her from the other side of the counter that she hasn’t seen before, either!

In Edinburgh at Tribe 1 Roz has had her baby boy (Congratulations to Roz!!) and is now on maternity leave for a few weeks.
When she comes back she will only be doing her lasering, not reception anymore, so the job has gone to young Fraser. He has had experience working in tattoo studios before, so he knows what to do  😀

Tiddy, who used to help out on reception in Tribe 1, has finished her degree with flying colours and will soon be going on to do further studies abroad.

we will update the website with photos

Jim was in a while ago and got a couple of cute tiger cubs, to represent his two daughters. it was always going to be a whole lower leg piece going around the calf, so today we added a tree and a water fall, or should i say the beginnings of it. there will be colour and more grey of course

and caroline got another bit added to her fox’s teaparty, this piece is so much fun, and sooo Caroline  😀

there is a wee Totoro in there, too, with the brolly

Declan is 18, and celebrating with a ….. sleeve and chest panel  😯
way to go, in at the deep end!

he sat for the whole outline today, it’s going to be colourful with a black and grey background

and Gillian got her lovely wee Athens owl finished. I’ve looked at plenty of pictures of this kind of owl since being asked to do this piece, and i defy anyone not to think that these are the cutest owls in the world. I want one  😀
Also, it this the first tattoo of olives anyone has ever seen? I don’t think I’ve ever done any!

Brad got the next instalment of his Guernica piece, after a painting by Picasso.
The Guernica is a really interesting picture, it’s all about  the Spanish civil war over 70 years ago.
You can read more about it here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guernica_%28painting%29

Steve is getting a 3/4 sleeve of abstract patterns, we are having a lot of fun with this, it’s going to be in full colour and very detailled

David is getting a green and purple dragon, we were were excited about the colours, and steamed ahead getting them in- usually I start with the background 🙂
detailling still to go in the dragon, too

Donald got his koi finished, he decided he wanted a traditional black scaled look, and the result is quite dark and dramatic. It remains to be seen if the regular scales work as well as a cover up as we would like, we might have to go back in with the laser and lighten spots here and there, although I think we might just be fine. I will want to see it all settled in a couple of months, and take it from there

I had charly and his wonderfully bonkers nature sleeve in all day, we worked our way up towards the moon and the night sky with the crows and bats and an owl.
The massive snake head got some colour, too. We are deliberately playing with scale and ways of rendering the creatures and plants, it’s to look a bit random and otherworldly. And nice and colourful 🙂

Katie’s art nouveau inspired lady is in progress, this, too, will be quite colourful, it’s early stages yet

Scott’s koi sleeve is getting there, we ran out of time half way through the purple flower

Sheena added a foxglove to her collection of ‘favourite things’  😀

Brian got the last of the colour added to his dragon, but now that it’s all complete, he thinks a bit more lasering in the wave on the forearm would really bring it all together, so Roz will be working on that.

In the meantime… I bring you Brian and his blue/green dragon 🙂

David is working on a Horiyoshi samurai warrior with a tiger. The samurai is in bright colours, bright against the black and grey tiger and background. The tiger still needs some shading, but we are getting there

Fiona is getting some old stars covered on her forearm, they had been lasered well to a light grey, so we were quite free to use colour over the top

Ryan got his black koi in blue water finished, in a nice reversal of the usual use of colour  😀
The effect is a lot more graphic and punchy

I had a great holiday, we were really lucky with the weather, perfect for enjoying time outdoors! really couldn’t have timed it better 🙂

Neil is getting a dragon sleeve, we are going for yellows and reds for the dragon, with some yet-to-be-decided colours for the flowers. sorry about the poor pictures

James is extending his dragon half sleeve by adding a koi at the bottom

Blair had a samurai tattoo done by another artists, and now wanted to work some kind of background around it to make it into a half sleeve.
I was a bit limited as to what I could do, as there was also some script placed in the gaps around the arm, but in the end we decided on swirling grey clouds

Bill is getting a lot of black in his leg pieces, and I’ve been skipping some of the updates, as we are just doing small sections often. However, now we have come to a point where we have completed the section around the knee, and it’s time for a photo!

Ian is getting a koi swimming up stream, it’s a cover up of an old piece which had been lasered a good bit to lighten it up. That was a great help, it meant that I could use greys to cover what was left of the old piece, rather than having to resort to something darker.

and then for something quite different, Steve wanted a piece by me that used the kind of flow I’m fond of, but without any of the concrete objects or creatures usually found in my pieces, like dragons or birds.
he likes paisley patterns, the shapes of wings and belly scales, but didn’t want any faces. I kept it abstract and two dimensional, but with the sweep and flow he likes. This piece will be very detailled and colourful
